Periodontal disease; armed with toothbrushes, floss and regular professional visits, we hope to conquer the second most common enemy affecting the health of mankind. Computer tracking, lasers, DNA probes, electronic and ultrasound and nuclear scanning all sound like props for a Sci fi movie, or at least the pentagons latest weapons. In reality they represent some of the most recent advances in the war against periodontal disease which is a world wide threatening disease. Since the disease tends to be painless, like most other insidious diseases, most people don’t realize they have it until damage has started or has even progressed an advanced stage. It’s been estimated that three out of four adults suffer from varying forms of Periodontal disease; armed with toothbrushes, floss and regular professional visits, we hope to conquer the second most common enemy affecting the health of mankind. It’s been estimated that three out of four adults suffer from varying forms of the disease, however, ninety percent remain unaware of the condition and as a result perfectly healthy teeth may be lost and most importantly a periodontal infection can be distributed to other parts of the body, which can provide a more life threatening potential. It seems that such an origin of the problem would be complicated, but in reality most cases begin with a patient who has not sought regular check ups, which would prevent the world wide destructive periodontal disease process.
